Sloppy Joes for Dinner

sloppy joes

This sloppy joes recipe has been tweaked and multiplied a bit over the years, but it remains one of my family’s favorites. This is especially true for my growing teenaged boys, who have already surpassed me in height and seem to be on a mission to eat me out of house and home. If you can relate, look no further for tonight’s dinner plan.

While you can make this on any night, it is perfect for when you need to make dinner ahead and heat it up quickly later, or eat in waves depending on who is home (and who is at practices, games, lessons, etc.) It is also great as leftovers sent in a thermos for lunch.

A note about using ground turkey instead of ground beef:

I always use ground turkey instead of beef since turkey is a leaner protein and lower in fat. The trick to cooking any dish with ground turkey is to season it at every stage of making the dish and to let it simmer once the dish is put together so that the flavors meld and the turkey takes on the flavor.

That being said, use ground beef if that’s what your family prefers! You’ll just need to add a step to drain the fat off before adding the other ingredients, but nothing else would change.

Now, let’s get to it!  Here is what you will need to make these sloppy joes.

  • 2 1/2 lbs ground turkey
  • 1 small yellow onion, chopped OR 2 T dried chopped onion
  • salt & pepper
  • 1 15-oz can tomato sauce
  • 1 6-oz can tomato paste
  • 1 tsp garlic salt
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 T quick oats
  • water to the correct consistency
